CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background

In this modern society, electricity has great control over the most daily activities for instance in domestic and industrial utilization of electric power for operations. Electricity can be generated from public supply to consumers in different ways including the use of water, wind or steam energy to drive the turbine as well as more recently the use of gas. Generators, solar energy and nuclear energy are also source of electricity [1].

  • Statement Of Problem

Generation of solar power is a holistic approach in meeting load demands in most part of Africa, which is a result of an erratic power supply in most nations of the continent. [2] Powering the whole load of an industry or an office setting is expensive as most industrial equipment are electrical loads. In maximizing the installed solar power capacity, there is need to shed a reasonable amount of load intelligently to reach an equilibrium point between the load to be powered and the installed solar power capacity. Electricity is an integral necessity for industrialization, security and all aspects of development [3]. Imo state university is within the geographic, political and demographics of Nigeria. The epileptic power supply prevalent in Nigeria is equally prevalent in the school. Since sunshine is abundant, then given the epileptic power supply situation in the country and its debilitating effects in our school, we seek to ensure power supply by using an inverter system that will be recharged using solar energy.

  • Aim and Objectives

The objective of this project also to design and build the solar charger that can taking energy from the sun and store it into the battery 12V. To achieve all the objectives of this project, a lot of work must be consider before the project done. This project seeks to put an end to epileptic power supply prevalent in the school with emphasis in the electrical and electronics engineering department and it entails thus –

  • To construct a 10kva sine wave inverter system using a microcontroller.
  • To acquire solar panel that will be used to recharge the inverter battery.
  • To incorporate charge controlling into the inverter so as to get a more advanced inverter system.
  • To install the said inverter system in the department hence saying bye bye to epileptic power supply.
    • Scope

Today, technology is very important and very useful to us. So we need to find way to improve ourselves. For example, generate the electricity using energy from the sun light. That we call is the solar photovoltaic modules. Because of that, we not hope electricity from TNB only but we can make it ourselves.    That’s why this system is designed. The problem here is we cannot produces constant supply for the load, so the charger needs to be design to store the energy to the battery. The output will stable when supply from battery is constant. Normally, the inverter is very hard to design because the input in DC and the output is AC, it is easy to burn. So the component must be suitable for higher temperature and higher efficiency. Nowadays, a lot of product used for DC load only, but this system is designed for load in AC.

  • Organization

This report is organized in such a way that it will be easy for the reader to follow the presentation. Here in chapter 1, the project and its relevant concepts are introduced. Also the problem to be solved is discussed. Next are the aims and objectives of the work. Chapter 2 looks at a review of relevant literature pertaining to the project work. The hardware concepts and components are equally discussed. Also we look at tools, simulation, debugging e.t.c in chapter3 we delve into the hardware design, and necessary tools to work with. In chapter 4 we look at the software development, hardware development, algorithm and flow chart, testing and implementation. We also presented the bill of engineering design and evaluation. Finally in chapter5 we recommend further development and conclusion.
